A One Piece A Live-Action TV Adaptation is On It’s Way

Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano has announced the news that popular Japanese manga and anime One Piece is getting a live-action television adaptation.

Among others, Hollywood producer Marty Adelstein of Tomorrow ITV Studios, which is also producing a live-action Cowboy Bebop, will be bringing Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates journey the world for the One Piece and the claim for the Pirate King mantle.

Alas, the much-loved show will not be in its native Japanese but rather turned into a ‘overseas’ drama. The Anime’s creator Eiichiro Oda has said that he “absolutely didn’t want to betray” fans who have passionately supporting the series since its birth nearly twenty years ago. “That was the condition from me”.

A ‘foreign TV drama’ may not sit very well with the bigger fans. Yet, Oda strongly feels that it is still possible to ensure the shows quality and integrity. The argument that ‘foreign TV dramas’ have much bigger budgets than Japanese is fickle and redundant at best.

Adelstein’s previous producing credits include heist drama Prison Break, Mr. Ed, the supernatural Tru Calling and the slasher Black Christmas, so the production values should be strong enough to visually stir us in the right way.
