Amazon Developing ‘Conan the Barbarian’ Series If at first you don’t succeed…

Conan the Barbarian is getting another shot at live, as Amazon are reportedly developing a new series based on the iconic character created by Robert E. Howard.

This announcement comes as another example of Amazon Studios’ efforts to not only find the next Game of Thrones, but to produce genre TV series that have the potential to be global hits.

The studio made waves last year when they paid a huge sum to acquire the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, intending to adapt the story into a massive production for the streaming service. Now, it looks as though Conan will join the ranks, in this new series from Colony co-creator Ryan Condal, and producer Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale). Also, just to prove how important it is for this series to hit the ground running, the project has also recruited frequent Game of Thrones, and Altered Carbon director Miguel Sapochnik.

Deadline has reported that Condal will use the series to explore the character’s origin, sticking close to the stories written by Howard, rather than turn to the Arnold Schwarzenegger as the primary influence. And given how the latest attempt at a Conan revival (starring Jason Momoa) was received, getting back to basics and getting the origins right could help with the fans.
