Marvel Comics Reveals Peggy Carter as Captain America The S.H.I.E.L.D. founder will take up the shield

Peggy Carter is finally going to become Captain America!

Okay, so it might just be in the alternate reality of Exiles, but still.

Agent Carter, one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. and one of the few to win Steve Rogers’ heart, has been a fan-favourite for many years, however, her popularity hit an all-time high when Hayley Atwell took on the role in Captain America: The First Avenger. Since that first appearance, she’s made countless cameos through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as having her own successful series which ran for two seasons.

While there’s no telling what the future holds for Atwell in the MCU, with Peggy Carter having passed away in Captain America: Civil War, there’s still decades of her S.H.I.E.L.D. service which could well mean the actress will make a return to the silver screen.

However, Marvel Comics has set a new goal for Peggy Carter fans. This week, the comics giant released their May solicits, and one cover really sticks out – that of Exiles #3.

Written by Black Bolt’s Saladin Ahmed, this new take on Exiles has already gotten plenty of coverage thanks to the inclusion of characters like cartoon Wolverine, future Kamala Khan, and Tessa Thompson’s version of Valkyrie joining the team. But, the third instalment is set to introduce an alternate version of Peggy Carter, who became Captain America.

Despite Peggy Carter’s lengthy history in the comicbooks, this is the first time she has taken up the mantle of Captain America – however, the character has feature on one of Marvel’s mobile games.

In 2016, Marvel celebrated the 75th anniversary of Captain America by introducing some alternate takes on the character, which features in their mobile games, and it was Puzzle Quest that introduced Peggy as Captain America, even going so far as to create a video to explain the character’s backstory.

After Steve Rogers was assassinated before he could complete the Super Soldier Program, Peggy stepped up to take his place. Exiles borrows from this version of Peggy’s character, also dubbed ‘Captain Carter’, and uses the same uniform that Jae Tsai designed for the game.

While there’s no telling whether this character will be sticking around, it’s certainly an exciting development.

Exiles #3 will be available from May 9th.
