There are a number of new locations that The Last Jedi is rumoured to be taking us to, such as Luke’s home on Ahch-To, the new First Order base, and the hitherto unmentioned casino city of Canto Bight, which makes its first appearance in the film’s new international trailer.
The trailer is pretty much made up of what we’ve already seen, with a few shots and lines from The Force Awakens in the beginning fox context. However, the mysterious new city shows up around the 2-minute mark. And then gets trashed by a herd of big-eared creatures.
Canto Bight is the new hive of villainy and scum in the new Star Wars trilogy, and acts as the base of Benicio del Toro’s hacker, DJ.
According to the official Star Wars website: “Located on the desert world of Cantonica, Canto Bight is a casino city and playground for the galaxy’s ultra-rich. It’s a place of both opportunity and high stakes, filled with casinos, racetracks, and other expensive distractions.”
And the big-eared creatures? Well, creature designer Neal Scanlan says they’re called Fathiers, a magical breed of canine racing animal that are mistreated by the people who keep them for entertainment in Canto Bight. So, it seems that someone sets them free – or uses them as a diversion.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 14th in the UK, and December 15th in the US.
