CBS All Access series, Star Trek Discovery is adding one of the franchise’s most iconic characters – Mr. Spock.
The role has only been played by two other actors – Leonard Nimoy in the original series, and Zachary Quinto in the big screen reboot – and now the half-Vulcan, half-human character will be played by Madam Secretary and In Time actor, Ethan Peck in Season 2 of the spinoff.
The events of Discovery take place around a decade before those of the original Star Trek series, and in the story the Enterprise’s Science Officer Spock is the foster brother of leading lady Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green).
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman said of the character’s return, “Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek. The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion. We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion, and yearning.”
When the casting was announced, Kurtzman was nothing but complimentary about Peck’s addition, “Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack, and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family.”
Not only does Ethan Peck have pretty big shoes to fill within the Star Trek universe, he also comes from some impressive acting stock, being the grandson of iconic Hollywood actor, Gregory Peck.
Star Trek Discovery returns for Season 2 in 2019.
